What is erosion?

Erosion protection matting – Erosion is the process that wears out the earth due to environmental influences such as wind or water. This process is best known for creating canyons or rivers over the centuries. In the mining sector, we need to focus on the short-term impact of erosion on the topsoil. Any land without vegetation cover is at high risk of wind or rain blowing away the exposed topsoil and washing it away.

What is the effect of erosion on the environment?

When considering erosion control, the first thing to look at is how erosion affects the local environment and what needs to be addressed. Erosive runoff carries topsoil and potentially other hazards away from their original location. This runoff often ends up in streams and streams and can harm the existing local watercourse ecosystem. In the mining sector, we must be mindful of the “dirty land” being removed from reserved and controlled areas. Soil contaminated with heavy metals or other mining chemicals transported by waterways can have harmful effects far beyond what is expected. Once contaminated material enters the watercourse, it can move throughout the system.

Soil erosion can be avoided by using the soil according to its capacity. Soil position, soil type, and slope determine the extent to which the soil is prone to erosion. That is not suitable for agriculture, or only suitable for erosion control activities.

There are several resources to help determine how soil should be used to prevent erosion:

* For Agricultural Land: The Land Management Field Guide shows and describes soil types in many areas and provides land use and management recommendations for each soil type.

* For Grasslands: Soil maps and soil types are available for most areas. They give landowners an idea of the land their property may occupy and are a useful planning tool.

Land Surface cover and runoff

The surface cover is an important factor in erosion control as it reduces the impact of raindrops falling on bare soil and wind lifting soil particles. It also reduces the speed of water flowing on the ground. The risk of erosion is significantly reduced when soil cover exceeds 30%. Full coverage can be achieved for many grazing systems and crops.

Runoff is concentrated as it moves down the slope. When a river flowing into a large basin reaches the shore, it is usually several hundred meters wide. Although the surface liner helps disperse the run, the concentration of the run is unavoidable. The coordination of the entire basin is essential to implementing flow control measures. The runoff can pass through multiple properties and cross multiple routes (sometimes rail routes) as it moves from the outermost part of the water catchment to the main drainage route or river.

Coconut Fiber Geotextile is Erosion Protection Matting

Erosion protection matting is a natural geosynthetic erosion control product which is a flexible and lightweight 3D mat made of high-strength coconut fiber geotextile that serves to protect slope surfaces or protect against soil erosion, and reduces emissions and promotes infiltration. Erosion protection mats work well to protect the soil surface from being washed away and make the grass grow quickly.

In other words, Erosion protection matting that is stabilized by coconut fiber geotextiles reduces the possibility of erosion caused by other heavy rains and provides a layer of green vegetation in rivers, riverbanks, pond edges, steep slopes, and grassy swamps. Plant erosion control mats not only prevent soil and sediment erosion but also provide excellent filtration and vegetation, ultimately improving soil conditions and slope stability.
